In the last year or so, I have seen more clearly the beauty of somebody simply asking about my faith and why I believe the way I do. It's an amazing honor for me to know that my life is different enough that someone would care to wonder. I thank God for opportunities like that.
It's made me realize the difference between zealously telling my beliefs to everyone compared to simply living as a follower of Christ. Too often we feel that being a true Christian means that we must scream out our beliefs to everyone without care if they're truly listening. We take so much advantage of our freedom of speech, that I think we sometimes forget about our duty to live.
I am not saying that we shouldn't speak to people about our beliefs. We must. It is our obligation to share the Good News that Christ has brought us. What I do find even more important, however, is the ability for the Spirit to help us discern between when, where, how and if to speak.
Christians today have grown an attitude of "us against them." We've become people who have forgotten that we too were once in the 'darkness.' We are shocked by sin. It is different living as a true Christian. So different that people will want to know. What I've grown to realize is that people want to know more about our God not because of what we say, but because of how we live.
14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."- Matt 5:14-16
